South Toms River is a municipality in Ocean County, home to roughly 3600 residents. With only a small section of its eastern border on the Toms River, the majority of this town consists of inland homes and businesses. Dividing the eastern and western portions of the municipality is the Garden State Parkway, with the onramp from Rt. 9 directly in the center of town, making it a convenient home for commuters.
If you’re looking to do something outside, Mathis Plaza, also known as Mathis Veterans Memorial Park, is a favorite destination among locals. Located on Atlantic City Boulevard, this waterfront park is known for its top-notch crabbing and fishing opportunities. Striped bass, bluefish, and yellow perch are some of the commonly found species in the area. Blue crabs are prevalent in the summer months here.
The plaza also serves as a destination for community events throughout the year. Mathis Plaza has been utilized for everything from car shows, movie nights, Easter egg hunts and trunk-or-treat events. While you’re there, treat yourself to something tasty from Chuck’s Ice Cream, a food truck that calls Mathis Park home. Chuck’s serves hot dogs, chili and French fries in addition to a variety of frozen treats.
