South Amboy

One half of the New Jersey Turnpike Exit 11 “The Amboys” is the City of South Amboy.  Also known as “The Gateway to the Shore”, the eastern part of town is on the southern banks of the Raritan River, across from Perth Amboy. The other three sides of town are shared with the Borough of Sayreville. NJ Transit has a station in town on N Broadway which provides service to New York, Long Branch, Bay Head, and Hoboken.

The Sadie Pope Dowdell Library is a great place to go in town. They have events targeted for young kids like story times. Programs for teens include lock-ins and their Dowdell Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB). This library also rents out sports equipment to youths with a library card.  Besides their great selection of books, adults can take part in their programs and exhibits both virtual and in-person.

Senior residents over the age of 60 that live in South Amboy can take advantage of all the resources available at the Senior Center. They provide fun events, group trips, and, of course, Bingo! Rides to doctors’ appointments in the area, exercise classes, and a book club is also available. Residents of all ages can enjoy a skate around the rink at South Amboy Arena Rollermagic. Along with roller skate and rollerblade rentals, they have a skate shop, snack bar, and novelty shop. They have themed skate parties open to the public and you can rent the rink for your own private party. For kids who prefer a more traditional past-time, the South Amboy Youth Athletic Association has T-ball, softball, and baseball teams. South Amboy has many parks, fields, and playgrounds for residents and visitors to enjoy all year long too.
