Lakewood is Ocean County’s most densely populated municipality, ranking fifth in terms of populous in the state, overall. Lakewood wasn’t always the busy metropolis you see today. When the first settlers arrived in 1789, the area was mainly dense forest. Over time, the land was cleared to build homes, and the first hints of industry were in the air as a sawmill and iron smelting operation were established in town a few years later.
Today, Lakewood is a business-centric town, with a bustling downtown area reminiscent of Philadelphia or NYC. The landscape of Lakewood’s downtown district starkly contrasts the mellow atmosphere of its neighboring coastal towns.
At the heart of the city is The Strand, a vaudeville theatre dating back to 1922. Nationally renowned acts such as Milton Berle, George Burns, Don McLean, Taylor Swift, George Carlin have performed there. Check out their event calendar to see which comedians, musicians and musicals will be there next!
Fans of America’s favorite pastime will want to plan a visit to Shoretown Ballpark (formerly known as First Energy Park). Home to local Minor League baseball team, the “Jersey Shore Blueclaws”, Shoretown Ballpark is a wonderful place to spend a summer evening outdoors with family and friends. Locals recommend visiting on “Fireworks Night” for an awesome display in the sky after the game!
