If you love small towns, you’ll love Helmetta. Situated in the middle of the Raritan Valley in Middlesex County, surrounded by East Brunswick, Monroe Township, and Spotswood, Helmetta covers a total area of just 0.88 square miles. The main road in town is called Main St. Most all of the town’s businesses are located on this strip while most residences can be found on spurs off of Main St. In terms of real estate, this small town offers just about everything from single family homes to townhouses and condos to luxury apartments.
Helmetta got its start as a mill town in the 1800’s producing snuff. The snuff mill district consists of the mill itself, employee housing, churches, Helmetta Pond, and other buildings. The mill sat abandoned for years prior to being converted into luxury apartments called the Lofts at Helmetta. The location, which opened in 2015, also has townhomes and includes amenities such as a heated saltwater pool, firepits, and sports areas and they allow pets in accordance with their policy! Plus, they are located just down the street from Helmetta Lake Park.
While back in the days when the mill was operational, Helmetta Pond served as a source of power for the mill, today it provides visitors with plenty of fun, outdoor activities like kayaking, fishing, walking the trail, and picnicking. Plus, there are basketball courts, a tennis court, and a playground too. It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon outdoors. Plus, the Ronald C. Wilson Pavilion often hosts Helmetta Day and other community events.
