Surrounded entirely by Monroe Township, the Borough of Jamesburg is just under one square mile large and is one of 21 pairs of “doughnut towns” in the state of New Jersey. The town was named for farmer and businessman James Buckelew. In 1847, Monroe Township refused an African American child admittance to school. Mr. Buckelew, who was already recognized within the agricultural community for his farming practices, built a schoolhouse that was open to all children. The school was called the “James B.” or “Jamesburg School”. Henceforth, the town became known as Jamesburg.
On the corner of Gatzmer Ave. and West Railroad Ave. you’ll find Jamesburg Hardware and Appliance. This store has been serving the community since the 1890’s. Next door is the Jamesburg Library. One of the great programs hosted by the library are the Free Little Library Book Exchange where community members are welcome to give a book and take a book. The exchange is located behind the library. You can also check out a Bird Watching Backpacks that include binoculars, maps, and more just like a book. Lastly, the Jamesburg Fire Department is located here. This all-volunteer group has been protecting the citizens of Jamesburg for over 100 years. And they do more than that. This department also puts smiles on kids faces during Christmas time when Santa makes his rounds through town and they also put up the town’s holiday decorations.
If you continue through town on Railroad Ave., you’ll access most of the town’s eateries. First, you’ll see Bovine Burgers. For over four years, this has been Jamesburg and Monroe’s got-to burger joint. Along with delicious burgers, they have milkshakes, hot dogs, salads, and so many more appetizing treats. This is followed by Domino’s Pizza, The Diner, and a number of other restaurants.
