The township originally called Washington eventually split into East Brunswick, Milltown, Spotswood, and the Borough of South River. The small town of South River has been a borough since 1897 and is lined on the east by the Old Bridge Turnpike and on the west by its namesake, the South River. Those that are interested in the history of the area should certainly check in with the South River Historical & Preservation Society. Founded in 1988, their earliest accomplishment was the purchase of a pair of paintings titled “The Willett Sisters of South River”. The group also had the Old School Baptist Church, now the South River Museum, registered with the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places.
South River has many opportunities for residents to both help others and to receive assistance. The towns food bank is available for those who need a bit of support and is run solely on donations from people and businesses in the community. Educational opportunities are aided by the South River Foundation for Education Excellence which is also a non-profit founded and run by volunteers. There is also a community garden where residents aim at improving empty lots in town while bringing together residents, representatives, and organizations. In addition to groups like the Scouts and The Imperial Music Center, there are a number of ways for people to get involved in this modest-sized town.
The community loves South River and South River loves the community. Their Cultural Arts and Heritage Commission and the Environmental Commission and Shade Tree Advisory are both working towards appreciating and improving life in South River. With almost a dozen other boards and commissions, it’s easy to see how much and why the residents care so much about their city.
