Prior to 1911, the Borough of Mantoloking was a part of Brick Township. Just over the Mantoloking bridge, Mantoloking is located on the Barnegat Peninsula bordered by Bay Head to the north and a section of Brick Township to the south. This quaint shore town was devastated in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. The storm swept away several homes, ruptured gas lines causing multiple fires, damaged the bridge, and forced the town to demolish the Borough Hall, which was built in 1928. However, in 2019, a brand-new Borough Hall was completed and opened for business. At this time, many homes along the coast have been restored and most communities, including the Borough of Mantoloking, have been revived and are thriving.
If you love nature and birds, you’ll want to plan a visit to Mantoloking. Bird lovers flock to the shore in the spring when beach-nesting birds return excited to see the endangered species the piping plover, least tern, and black skimmer. The return of the birds inconveniently occurs at the same time as beach goers return, however. Thankfully, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection keeps a close eye on the nests and places barriers around them to safeguard them.
Love the water? Check out The Mantoloking Yacht Club. This is a well-known private sailing club. It has been open since the early 1900’s and has had ten of its members go on to be Olympians. In addition to sailing, the club also rents their space for private events, has tennis courts along with lessons, and always has a full calendar of events for its members. For example, every 4th of July the club hosts the Casi & Chrissy Memorial Mile Run, followed by parade, lunch, and games.
