Ocean Township, not to be confused with the other Ocean Township in Monmouth County, is often referred to as Waretown by locals. The confusion between the two “Ocean Townships” in New Jersey is so prominent, an official name change was put up for petition in 2006, however it failed to receive enough signatures.
Ocean Township has a history rooted in ship building, with many captains in the early 1700’s taking advantage of the town’s close proximity to water and building majestic homes on bayfront lots. The love affair between residents and the Barnegat Bay still runs strong today, with much of the activity in the town is centered around water-related activities.
Located due east of Waretown in the middle of the Barnegat Bay is “Kite Island”, a small sandy island surrounded by knee deep water. Look across the bay on any windy summer day and you’re guaranteed to see dozens of kitesurfers launching 20-40ft in the air as they buzz around the island. Kiteboarders flock to the area from all over the east coast, and Green Hat Kiteboarding is located right in town to provide them with the latest gear for their adventures on the water. Kainetic Adventures runs lessons at the island, so be sure to check them out if you’re trying to break into the sport.
Ocean Township has something for land lovers too! A 900-acre park known as Wells Mills is the largest in the county. Loaded with walking and biking trails, Wells Mills is the perfect place to spend the day. Be careful though! The trail system is so extensive, it is recommended that you always hike or bike with a partner and both bring your phones so you don’t get lost.
