Avon-by- the-Sea

If you love the water, Avon-by-the-Sea is for you. This Victorian community has bodies of water on three sides – The Shark River Inlet on the south, Sylvan Lake to the north, and, of course, the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Even though many water-front towns are considered seasonal, Avon-by-the-Sea is a year-round utopia. Offering up a variety of restaurants, a public beach with a boardwalk, and a rich history, Avon is a hidden gem in New Jersey.

If you love history and historical buildings, you’ll want to visit the Avon Public Library. The library was a gift from none other than Andrew Carnegie himself in 1916. This “father of philanthropy” funded the building of 2,509 libraries worldwide from 1883 to 1929. His libraries were the first ones to offer open-shelf policies giving the public free access to the stacks as opposed to the traditional closed-stack systems libraries had in place at the time. The Avon Public Library is one of only 17 Carnegie buildings still operating as a library.
